Training Programme
1. The ISA/Contractors Training Programme
Contractors with the Authority have a legal obligation to provide and fund training opportunities for trainees from developing States and the
personnel of the Authority. The purpose of the obligation is to ensure that personnel from developing States are provided with appropriate operational expertise to enable them to participate in deep seabed mining.
To date 2 Cook Islanders have been aboard exploration vessels in the international waters; Thomas Whiddon (year 2017) and Eusenio Fatialofa (year 2017).

2. The Endowment Fund
The Endowment Fund for Marine Scientific Research in the Area aims to promote and encourage the conduct of marine scientific research in the
Area for the benefit of humankind as a whole, in particular by supporting the participation of qualified scientists and technical personnel from developing countries in marine scientific research programmes and offering them opportunities to participate in training, technical assistance and scientific cooperation programmes.
3. The ISA internship programme
This programme ‚Äčis twofold: (a) to provide a framework through which students and young government officials from diverse academic backgrounds
gain exposure to the work and functions of the ISA to enhance their educational experience and/or gain experience in the work of the ISA; and (b) to enable ISA to benefit from the assistance of qualified students and young government officials specialized in various skills within the scope of activities of the ISA.
Cook Islander Alex Herman interned at the ISA for a month, learning the ins-n-outs of the Authority's legal system.
